WITTY SPARROW
There are so many fairytales out there only for children, but not all leave as much as the everlasting impression as a selected few does. Likewise, the authors of those marvelous stories are just as eternal in spirit and in our hearts. And so, this series has been designed to bring to you some of the selected works of those authors. The lingo used by the authors in every story of the series has been left intact; since the stories have not grown only because of their rich content, but also because of the writers’ usage of the language. This has been done in hopes that every child would be able to gain whatever knowledge they wish to, from the stories.
উপেন্দ্রকিশোর রায়চৌধুরী। জন্ম ১৮৬৩ সালের ১০ই মে (বাংলা ১২৭০, ২৭শে বৈশাখ) ময়মনসিংহ জেলার মসূয়া গ্রামে শিশুদের জন্য তিনি গল্প, নাটক, কবিতা, গান, বৈজ্ঞানিক প্রবন্ধ রচনার পাশাপাশি অনেক ছবি এঁকেছেন । তিনিই প্রথম শিশুদের জন্য বিভিন্ন বিষয় নিয়ে সাহিত্য রচনা করেন। বিখ্যাত সন্দেশ নামের শিশু-পত্রিকাটি তিনি সম্পাদনা করতেন। টুনটুনির বই, গল্পমালা, ছোটদের রামায়ণ, ছোটদের মহাভারত, সেকালের কথা, জন্তু-জানোয়ার এসব তাঁর বিখ্যাত বই। তিনি ১৯১৫ সালের ২০শে ডিসেম্বর মাত্র ৫২ বছর বয়সে মারা যান ।
বাংলা শিশু-সাহিত্যের সর্বশ্রেষ্ঠ লেখক সুকুমার রায় তাঁর বড়ছেলে । বিখ্যাত শিশু-সাহিত্যিক সুখলতা রাও তাঁর মেয়ে । তাঁর আরেক মেয়ে পুণ্যলতা এবং অন্য দুই ছেলে সুবিনয় ও সুবিমল তাঁরাও লেখক ছিলেন । আবার বিশ্বখ্যাত চলচ্চিত্রকার ও লেখক সত্যজিৎ রায়ের বাবা হচ্ছেন সুকুমার রায় । এমন লেখক-পরিবার বাঙালীদের মধ্যে খুব বেশি নেই ।
