In \'Self Portrait 1991\', a poem in this volume, Murtaja Baseer mentions his calling and hobbies: painting, reading, gathering matchbox labels from home and abroad, philately, researches into Bengal Sultanate. He does not, however, tell of his efforts at producing fictions and poems, nor of collection of coins. Murtaja Baseer is in fact, a multifaceted talent. He is, Indeed, a front ranking painter of Bangladesh. His fictions have elicited eager responses from the readers who also took interest in his poems. His historical researches have been well received at home and abroad. ... He has himself rendered the poems into English. The present volume is basically a work of translation, the originals merely accompany the renditions. ... The pieces, in the main, are love poems. These are references to nature and to places at home and abroad, but all these are presented as a background of the emotional experience. The poems deal with the variety of deep feelings of love. ডক্টর মুহম্মদ শহীদুল্লাহ্র কনিষ্ঠ সন্তান মুর্তজা বশীর (জন্ম ১৯৩২)। ১৯৫৪ সালে ঢাকায় গভর্নমেন্ট ইন্সটিটিউট অফ আটর্স্ (বর্তমানে চারুকলা ইন্সটিটিউট) থেকে প্রথম বিভাগে উত্তীর্ণ হয়ে কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের আশুতোষ ম্যুজিয়ম থেকে টিচার্স ট্রেনিং সার্টিফিকেট (আর্ট এ্যাপ্রিসিয়েশন) লাভ করেন। ১৯৫৬-৫৮ সালে ইতালীর ফ্লোরেন্সে একাদেমী দ্যেল বেল্লে আরটিতে চিত্রকলা ও দেয়াল চিত্র বিষয়ে অধ্যয়ন করেন। ১৯৭১-৭৩ সালে প্যারিসের ইকোলে ন্যাশিওনাল সুপিরিয়্যর দ্য বোজার্ট ও আকাদেমী গোয়েৎস-এ মোজাইক ও ছাপচিত্র বিষয়ে অধ্যয়ন করেন। ১৯৭৮ সালে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র সরকারের আমন্ত্রণে একমাসের জন্য আমেরিকায় আটটি ষ্টেটের বিভিন্ন ম্যুজিয়ম পরিদর্শন করেন। ১৯৬৩ সালে উর্দু চলচ্চিত্র কারোয়াঁর কাহিনী ও চিত্রনাট্য এবং ১৯৬৪ সালে নদী ও নারী চলচ্চিত্রের চিত্রনাট্য রচনা ও শিল্প নির্দেশনা করেন। ১৯৭৯ সালে তাঁর উপন্যাস আলট্রামেরীন এবং ২০০১ সালে নির্বাচিত রচনাবলী নিয়ে মুর্তজা বশীর: মূর্ত ও বিমূর্ত শীর্ষক গ্রন্থ প্রকাশ হয়। ১৯৮৯-৯৩ বেনারস বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের জার্নাল অফ্ দ্য নিউমিসম্যাটিক সোসাইটি অফ ইন্ডিয়াতে প্রাক-মুঘল যুগে বাংলার সুলতানদের শাসন আমলে প্রচলিত মুদ্রা বিষয় গবেষণাধর্মী একাধিক মূল্যবান নিবন্ধ প্রকাশ করেন। ১৯৮৭ সালে ব্রিটিশ কাউন্সিল ফেলোশীপে দু’মাসের জন্য লন্ডনে যান এবং ১৯৮৮ সালে ভারতের আই.সি.সি.আর ফেলেশীপে দিল্লী, বেনারস ও কলকাতার বিভিন্ন জাদুঘরে ‘বাংলা চিত্রকলার ঐতিহ্য’-এর ওপর গবেষণা করেন। ১৯৯৩ ও ১৯৯৫-১৯৯৬ সালে পুনরায় আই.সি.সি.আর-এর অনুদানের ‘মন্দির টেরাকোটা শিল্প’-এর ওপর পশ্চিম বঙ্গের প্রায় তিনশত গ্রামে সরজমিনে পর্যবেক্ষণ করার জন্য মাঠ পর্যায়ে অনুসন্ধান করেন। চিত্রশিল্পে অবদানের জন্য ১৯৭৫ সালে বাংলাদেশ শিল্পকলা একাডেমী পুরস্কার এবং ১৯৮০ সালে একুশে পদক লাভ করেন। ১৯৭৩ সালে চট্টগ্রাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের চারুকলা বিভাগে সহকারী অধ্যাপক পদে যোগ দেন এবং ১৯৯৮ সালে প্রফেসররূপে অবসর গ্রহণ করেন। মুর্তজা বশীর ১৯৬২ সালে বিবাহ করেন এবং দু’কন্যা ও এক পুত্রের পিতা।/ Murtaja Basser, bom in 17 August 1932, Dhaka, Education: 1949-54 Govt. Published the Bangla novel Ultramarine in 1979; collection of selected works by Murtaja Baseer : Murto-o-Bimurto in 2001; research work : Mudra-o- Shilalipir Aloke Banglar Habshi Sultan-o-Tatkalin Samaj in 2004. Written several articles from 1989 to 1993, on the coins of Bengal Sultans of pre-Mughal India which have been published in the Journal of the Numismatic Society of India (JNSI), Benaras University, Varanasi, India; written story and screenplay for Urdu film \'Carwan\' (Caravan) in 1963; worked as screenplay writer, art director and chief assistant director in Bangla film Nadi-o-Nari\' (Women and Rivers) in 1964; Art director in Urdu film \'Kaise Kahoon\' (How to Say) in 1965. Awards: 2003 Sultan Padak, Narail, 1980 Ekushe Padak, Govt. of the People\'s Republic of Bangladesh, 1975 Academy Award, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Dhaka, 1973 Prix National, Festival of Paintings, Cagnes-sur Mer, France. Taught in the Department of Fine Arts, University of Chittagong, since 1973 and retired as Professor in July 1998.
