Ulfa & The Insurgency in Assam
Assam, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram are seven relatively unexplored and isolated Indian states, bordering China, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. Integration of these areas into the mainstream of Indian state had always been a problem and reason for armed insurgencies in these areas for a separate identity. Of all the armed groups the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) is quite powerful fighting g for an Independent Assam. Despite many assaults conducted by the Government of India a total silencing of the organisation could not be achieved. However, dialogue has begun between a section of the ULFA leadership and the Government of India. But there are doubts about the outcomes of the process as the organisation stands divided. Mahfuz Ullah, one of the leading media personalities and political analysts of Bangladesh, holds Masters degrees in Physics and journalism & Mass Communication. He writes on traditional and non-traditional security issues of concern for Bangladesh. This book is published especially for the readers of Bangladesh. Interest about ULFA and its activities grew as the clampdown against the leaders of the organization started in late 1997. Of late, the arrest of leading leaders of ULFA exposed the activities of the organization to the people of Bangladesh.
বাংলাদেশের মিডিয়া জগতের উজ্জ্বল ব্যক্তিত্ব, ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে কৃতিত্বের সঙ্গে পদার্থবিদ্যা ও সাংবাদিকতায় স্নাতকোত্তর ডিগ্রীধারী মাহফুজ উল্লাহ তৎকালীন পূর্ব পাকিস্তান ছাত্র ইউনিয়নের নেতৃস্থানীয় কর্মী হিসেবে ঊনসত্তরের ১১ দফা আন্দোলনে সক্রিয়ভাবে অংশগ্রহণ করেন। এই আন্দোলনের বিভিন্ন রাজনৈতিক আলোচনা পরিচালনায় এবং প্রচারপত্র রচনায় তিনি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করেন। পরবর্তীতে বাংলা ছাত্র ইউনিয়নের সভাপতি হিসেবেও দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। ছাত্ররাজনীতির কারণে আইয়ুবী সামরিক শাসনামলে তাকে ঢাকা কলেজ থেকে বহিষ্কার করা হয়। ছাত্রাবস্থায়ই মাহফুজ উল্লাহ সাংবাদিকতা পেশার সঙ্গে জড়িয়ে পড়েন। বাংলাদেশের সবচেয়ে জনপ্রিয় সাপ্তাহিক বিচিত্রার ১৯৭২ সালে জন্মলগ্ন থেকেই এ পত্রিকার সঙ্গে জড়িত ছিলেন। মাঝে চীন গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রে বিশেষজ্ঞ হিসেবে, কোলকাতাস্থ বাংলাদেশ উপদূতাবাসে এবং ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের গণযোগাযোগ ও সাংবাদিকতা বিভাগে খণ্ডকালীন শিক্ষক হিসেবে কাজ করেন। বিভিন্ন সময়ে বাংলাদেশের নেতৃস্থানীয় বাংলা ও ইংরেজি দৈনিকে কাজ করেছেন, রেডিও ও টেলিভিশনে অনুষ্ঠান উপস্থাপনা করেছেন। মাহফুজ উল্লাহ আন্তর্জাতিকভাবে পরিচিত একজন সক্রিয় পরিবেশবিদ। বাংলাদেশে তিনিই প্রথম পরিবেশ সাংবাদিকতা শুরু করেন। বিভিন্ন বিষয়ে বাংলা ও ইংরেজি ভাষায় লেখা তার বইয়ের সংখ্যা ৫০-এর অধিক। এবং এসবের অধিকাংশই পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন নেতৃস্থানীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের লাইব্রেরীতে সহায়ক গ্রন্থ হিসেবে সংরক্ষিত আছে। ব্যক্তিগত জীবনে তিনি ভারতের কমিউনিস্ট পার্টির অন্যতম প্রতিষ্ঠাতা পরলোকগত কমরেড মুজাফফর আহমদের দৌহিত্র। তাঁর অগ্রজ অর্থনীতিবিদ প্রফেসর মাহবুব উল্লাহ ১৯৬৯-এর গণঅভ্যুত্থানের সময় পূর্ব পাকিস্তান ছাত্র ইউনিয়নের (মেনন গ্র“প) সাধারণ সম্পাদক হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। তাঁর পিতা মরহুম শিক্ষাবিদ হাবীব উল্লাহ এবং মাতা মরহুমা ফয়জুননিসা বেগম। তিনি বিবাহিত এবং তিন সন্তানের জনক। Mahfuz Ullah was active in the left student movement of the sixties and took part in Bangladesh’s War of Independence. With university degrees in Physics and Journalism & Mass Communication, he took up journalism and worked for country’s major newspapers for more than three decades. He has pioneered environmental journalism in Bangladesh. He has written about 35 books that include: Press Under Mujib Regime, Mass Upsurge of 69, Purba Pakistan Chhatra Union: Gouraber Dinlipi (a 1450-page history of the country’s left student movement), ULFA and the Insurgency in Assam, Environmental Politics in Bangladesh, Intellectual Property Rights and Bangladesh. His work on education, Our School, was published and globally distributed by UNICEF. He has also edited several internationally important publications. He regularly appears on TV as a commentator on socio-political and environmental issues. As an adjunct faculty, he teaches at Daffodil International University (DIU), Dhaka. Mahfuz Ullah founded and heads the Centre for Sustainable Development (CFSD) and was the first Bangladeshi to be elected, in 2008 for four years, a Member of the Governing Council of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
